MEALS ON WHEELS
“I am very fortunate to have people who care for seniors. Those who deliver meals
are so pleasant and I am thankful for all they do for me. You should all know how
much this means to me and I can’t thank you enough.” Read more testimonials
Meals On Wheels (MOW) is a not-for-profit program administered by the Visiting Nurse Association of Long Island and funded in part by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, the New York State Office for the Aging and the U.S. Administration on Aging. MOW is dedicated to delivering nutritious meals to high-risk individuals over 60 with impaired mobility, and a limited number of individuals with disabilities under 60. The program is designed to provide nutritional education, related social services, information and referrals to community-based resources and services.  Meal Preparation and Delivery of MealsMeals are prepared at local hospitals and two private kitchen facilities. With the help of volunteers, two meals a day (one hot and one cold) are delivered up to five days a week. Weekend meals are available for the most vulnerable individuals on a limited basis. Counseling and nutritional education are also provided and recipients are linked with other community agencies for additional services to help maintain independence. Length of ServiceService can be provided on a short or long term basis (for partial or full week) and/or as intermittent respite. Need is established at an initial home assessment visit. Reassessments are made every six months thereafter. Participant EligibilityEligibility is established by a Program Case Worker, following guidelines of the funding agency. Priority is given first to those who have the greatest need. Service Areas
